Cher Breaks With Democrats Over Communist Ideas, “I’m Not On Board With That”

Cher Zohran Mamdani

Cher has survived disco, grunge, auto-tune, and more comebacks than anyone can count. But the music legend says there is one thing that genuinely scares her, and it is the direction of the Democratic Party.

The singer, who has supported Democrats for most of her adult life, told a small group of friends that the new version of the party frightens the living daylights out of her. She did not hold back.

“Green energy, progressive ideas, I’m on board with all that,” she said. “But communism? Has everyone forgotten the Cold War? I’m not on board with that.”

Those who heard the remarks say Cher spoke more like a worried grandmother than a political firebrand. She talked about the fears she grew up with, the news reports from behind the Iron Curtain, and the relief she felt when the Soviet Union finally fell apart. To her, the idea that young Americans would now cheer for the same ideas feels like a bad rerun.

“She’s been loyal to that party forever,” said Alexa Bruno, a friend who has known the singer since the 1980s. “She’s written checks, she’s done rallies, she’s posted at three in the morning. But she told us, flat out, that she doesn’t recognize these people. She said it felt like someone changed the locks on her own house.”

Cher made it clear she is not about to become a card-carrying member of anything else. Instead, she says she will keep supporting candidates who talk sense, regardless of party. If a Democrat makes sense, great. If a Republican or an independent makes more sense, she will listen to them too.

That might sound like common sense to most people, but in Hollywood it is close to heresy. Stars are expected to pick a side and stay there. Openly saying that you might vote for whoever has the better ideas can cost invitations, friendships, and the occasional magazine cover.

Cher does not seem worried. She has never been one to follow the crowd, and at this point in her career, she hardly needs anyone’s permission.

And she is not the only one feeling this way. A growing number of longtime Democrats across the country say they can’t picture a future with the new crop of Marxists rising inside the party. Many are retirees, union members, and small business owners who stuck with the party through decades of change. They are fine with reform. They are not fine with revolution.

Political strategists say these voters are quietly becoming one of the most important groups in the country. They do not make a lot of noise, but they vote in every election, and they remember history.

For now, Cher says she will keep speaking her mind, keep supporting the people she believes in, and keep reminding younger voters what the twentieth century actually looked like.

“I lived through it,” she reportedly said. “I don’t need a sequel.” Her publicist did not respond to a request for comment.
