Clint Eastwood Fires Back At Matt Damon Over Oscars Return, “Ask Matt About Harvey Weinstein”

Matt Damon took a shot at Clint Eastwood this week. Eastwood needed exactly one post to answer.

The trouble started after Eastwood handed his Oscars back to the Academy, a move that sent shockwaves through Hollywood. The legendary filmmaker has won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture for “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby,” and his decision to return them was seen as a clear message to the industry.

Damon, who starred in Eastwood’s “Invictus” and “Hereafter,” said he was “really let down” by it. “Clint’s an icon,” Damon said. “Those were his, fair and square. Too bad he let politics turn his heart black.”

It wasn’t long before Eastwood saw it. He answered on X and ended it fast.

@EastwoodOriginal 5:06PM: “Go ask Matt how black his heart got when his buddy Harvey Weinstein got locked up.”

The post exploded online. Within hours, it had been shared hundreds of thousands of times. Eastwood’s fans called it vintage Clint, the kind of line he might have growled in “Dirty Harry.”

“He didn’t write a paragraph,” one fan posted. “He didn’t need to.”

The reference to Weinstein struck a nerve because of Damon’s history. His breakout film, “Good Will Hunting,” was released by Miramax, the company Weinstein co-founded with his brother. The movie earned Damon and Ben Affleck an Oscar for their screenplay and made both of them stars. Weinstein was later convicted of sex crimes and imprisoned.

Since Eastwood’s post, Damon has said nothing. No reply on social media, no statement through his publicist, nothing in interviews.

Crickets from Damon.

The exchange has added fuel to an ongoing debate about politics in Hollywood. Eastwood, now 96, has long marched to his own beat. He has supported Republican candidates, made films that don’t follow the industry’s preferred messages, and largely ignored criticism from his peers.

Damon has been more of an insider, working with major studios and staying in step with most of Hollywood’s mainstream. His defenders said his comment about Eastwood was fair and that dragging Weinstein into it was a cheap move.

Eastwood’s supporters weren’t having it. They argued that if Damon wants to talk about who let what turn their heart black, he might want to think about the company he kept at the start of his career.

Others in Hollywood have stayed mostly quiet. A few actors privately told reporters they thought Damon should have known better than to pick a fight with Eastwood, of all people.

Eastwood himself hasn’t posted anything more. People close to him say that’s on purpose. He said what he wanted to say. Funny who he got his start from.
