Colin Kaepernick tried one more time. It cost him for good. The former 49ers quarterback has been banned from every NFL stadium for life after he snuck onto the San Francisco sideline during a home game and knelt for the national anthem.
According to stadium staff, Kaepernick arrived at the game and convinced security to allow him entry to the sideline by claiming to be a “correspondent journalist.” Workers say he looked the part, with a press-style badge around his neck and a phone in his hand.
“He talked like he belonged there,” said one employee. “He’s a recognizable guy, but he had his hood up and sunglasses on. By the time anyone realized who it was, he was already down there.”
Once the national anthem began playing, he stepped three feet forward and knelt down.
It was a callback to 2016, when Kaepernick first knelt during the anthem to protest racial injustice. The gesture turned him into one of the most polarizing figures in sports. Supporters called him a hero. Critics said he disrespected the flag and the military. He hasn’t taken an NFL snap since that season.
This time, the moment came and went without much notice.
No camera captured this action. The TV broadcast was showing the flag and the players on the field. Fans in the stands didn’t seem to see it. Only a few people on the sideline knew what was going on.
The security staff escorted him out of the stadium immediately after.
“They didn’t make a big deal out of it,” said a fan sitting in the front row. “Two guards walked him up the tunnel and that was it. I didn’t even know it was him until I saw it online later.”
The NFL acted fast. League officials notified Kaepernick that he is no longer allowed in any NFL stadium, for any reason, for the rest of his life. A league spokesperson said the ban was about security.
“Using false credentials to access the field is a serious violation,” the spokesperson said. “It puts players and staff at risk.”
Kaepernick’s allies called the ban extreme and said the league was punishing him for his views. Some activists urged fans to boycott games in protest.
Many fans had a different reaction. They said Kaepernick’s moment had long passed and that sneaking onto the field under false pretenses only made him look desperate.
“He’s become too much woke,” said another fan outside the stadium. “Even people who agreed with him back then are tired of it.”
“It’s sad, honestly,” said one longtime 49ers season-ticket holder. “He had a real career. Now he’s pretending to be a reporter so he can kneel where nobody’s watching.”
The 49ers said they are reviewing their credentialing process to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Kaepernick hasn’t commented. No impact. Just like always.
