Colin Kaepernick’s attempt to secure the maximum NFL pension and lifetime healthcare benefits has reportedly been rejected following a mediation decision concerning how his years away from the league should be counted.
Kaepernick was seeking a pension of up to $700,000, along with lifetime healthcare coverage. His argument centered on the number of seasons he should receive credit for after his NFL career was interrupted.
The former quarterback argued that his time away from the league should be considered when calculating the eight seasons required for the maximum benefits.
According to Kaepernick’s argument, his career did not simply end because he chose to walk away from football. He maintained that the political controversy surrounding his national anthem protests played a major role in preventing him from continuing his NFL career, despite his belief that he remained capable of playing.
The mediator ultimately rejected that position.
The decision stated that the NFL had provided opportunities for Kaepernick to remain connected to the league and that the required number of credited seasons had not been completed.
“NFL does not bear responsibility for the way Mr. Kaepernick chose to use the platform,” the mediation report stated. “The league did offer the opportunities but the required number of seasons has not been played.”
That conclusion dealt a major blow to Kaepernick’s effort to have his years outside the NFL included in his retirement calculations.
At the center of the dispute was the question of whether time away from an active NFL roster could be treated as service time for purposes of calculating pension eligibility.
Kaepernick argued that the circumstances surrounding his departure deserved consideration. His supporters have long maintained that the controversy surrounding his protests made it difficult for him to find another opportunity in the league.
The mediation decision took a different approach, focusing on the number of seasons actually credited to the player rather than the circumstances surrounding his absence.
As a result, Kaepernick’s request for the maximum pension and lifetime healthcare benefits was rejected.
The issue is separate from Kaepernick’s earlier grievance against the NFL. In 2017, he filed a complaint alleging that NFL owners had colluded to prevent him from finding employment after he became one of the most prominent figures in the national anthem protest movement. That case was settled in 2019 through a confidential agreement.
The latest dispute concerns retirement benefits rather than whether Kaepernick was unfairly denied employment.
The decision could also reignite discussion about how professional sports leagues calculate benefits for players whose careers end under unusual circumstances.
Kaepernick’s case is particularly notable because his final NFL appearance came after his protests had already become a national controversy. He subsequently remained outside the league while continuing his activism and other projects.
For Kaepernick, however, the mediation decision means that those years away from the field will not be added to his credited NFL service under the ruling.
The $700,000 pension and lifetime healthcare package he sought will therefore remain out of reach under the decision.
Kaepernick has yet to publicly comment on the outcome.
For now, the ruling closes another chapter in the long-running dispute surrounding the former quarterback’s relationship with the NFL, his career after 2016 and the benefits he believes should have followed his years in professional football.
