Elon Musk is reportedly taking his interest in Hollywood to another level, with a proposed $50 billion offer to acquire Warner Bros. and Paramount as the two entertainment companies move toward a major merger.
According to the scenario, Musk discussed the idea during a recent podcast, explaining that he isn’t interested in simply investing in the new company. Instead, he wants to take control of both studios and build an entertainment company around his own vision.
“My dream is to create a new, non-woke company out of these two and change Hollywood,” Musk said.
“I’ve offered them $50 billion to buy both companies, and if they agree, I’ll focus on making non-woke movies. The woke mind virus is everywhere,” he added.
The proposal would represent a dramatic expansion of Musk’s business interests. He is already involved in technology, transportation, space exploration and social media, but acquiring two major Hollywood studios would put him directly in charge of a massive collection of film and television properties.
Warner Bros. and Paramount together control some of the entertainment industry’s most recognizable franchises. Their combined library includes major properties such as DC, Harry Potter, Mission: Impossible, Top Gun and SpongeBob SquarePants.
The hypothetical acquisition would therefore give Musk access to a huge portfolio of established characters and franchises.
It would also give him influence over movie production, television programming and streaming.
Musk’s supposed plan centers on changing what he sees as an overly political Hollywood. He has repeatedly criticized what he describes as “woke” culture, and the proposed acquisition would give him an opportunity to put those beliefs directly into his entertainment strategy.
Rather than simply complaining about the industry, the plan would involve creating an entirely new corporate culture around the studios.
Under Musk’s vision, movies would focus more heavily on entertainment and less on political messaging.
The proposal comes as Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery pursue their own massive corporate transaction. Paramount has agreed to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in a deal valued at approximately $110 billion, creating a major combined entertainment company.
Musk’s hypothetical $50 billion offer would therefore represent an entirely different path for the two businesses.
There is also a real-world connection between Musk and the transaction. Paramount has reportedly considered bringing Musk into a group of investors that could participate in financing the deal.
That potential involvement, however, is very different from Musk personally buying both companies for $50 billion.
Still, the possibility of Musk becoming more deeply involved in Hollywood has generated plenty of speculation about what his influence could look like.
A Musk-controlled studio would almost certainly bring changes to the way executives approach movie development and marketing.
His management style at other companies has often involved major organizational changes, aggressive deadlines and an emphasis on rapid decision-making. Applying that approach to Hollywood could produce a very different studio environment.
It could also create significant tension with established Hollywood executives and creative professionals.
For now, the $50 billion purchase proposal remains part of the fictional scenario described above, while the real Paramount-Warner Bros. transaction continues on its own path.
The actual merger would create one of the industry’s largest entertainment companies, with a vast collection of film, television and streaming assets.
Whether Musk ultimately becomes involved as an investor or plays a larger role remains a separate question.
But the idea of Musk taking control of two Hollywood giants certainly represents a dramatic thought experiment.
After reshaping industries ranging from electric vehicles to space technology and social media, Musk would have one more industry left to challenge.
This time, it would be Hollywood.
