Ilhan Omar may soon have to do something politicians usually try very hard to avoid: sit down, answer questions, and explain the timeline. According to the story making the rounds, Omar has been summoned to immigration court in Minneapolis, and she’s expected to appear alongside the man identified as her husband.
Or her brother. That distinction, of course, depends on which version of the story you believe. Either way, the court apparently has some questions. And they aren’t particularly complicated questions.
Who was married to whom?
When did the marriage take place?
When did it end?
What was the relationship between Omar and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi?
And why has the entire subject remained controversial for so many years?
Omar has repeatedly denied the claim that Elmi was her brother. Her supporters have argued that the allegation is nothing more than an old political attack that has never been conclusively proven. Critics, meanwhile, have continued pointing to the complicated timeline surrounding Omar’s marriages and immigration history.
The result has been a controversy that refuses to die. Every few years, the story comes back. New documents appear. Old allegations resurface. Politicians argue. Supporters defend her. Critics demand answers.
Then everyone moves on. Until the next time.
But an immigration court would presumably have less interest in political arguments and considerably more interest in paperwork.
Dates.
Names.
Marriage certificates.
Immigration records.
And a straightforward explanation of what happened.
That could make for a rather uncomfortable afternoon.
Imagine sitting in a courtroom while the judge goes through the timeline and simply asks for clarification.
“Representative Omar, who was this person?”
“My husband.”
“And this other person?”
“My husband.”
“And this person?”
“Well…”
At some point, even the judge might need a flowchart.
The controversy surrounding Omar’s marriage history became especially prominent in 2019, when the Minneapolis Star Tribune published a detailed examination of the timeline and documents surrounding her marriages. The story renewed questions that had already been circulating publicly. Omar has consistently rejected the allegation that Elmi was her brother.
The allegation itself has never been conclusively established. PolitiFact previously concluded that available evidence did not prove Elmi was Omar’s brother, while noting that significant questions surrounding the marriage timeline remained.
That distinction matters. Questions are not proof. An accusation is not a conviction. And a complicated timeline does not automatically establish wrongdoing.
But questions can still be questions. And apparently, some of those questions have been waiting a very long time for answers.
If Omar and Elmi are ultimately required to explain their relationship and the timeline surrounding their marriage, there won’t be much room for campaign speeches or political slogans. The court won’t care about Democrats.
It won’t care about Republicans.
It won’t care about social media arguments.
It will want documents and answers.
That’s it.
After years of speculation, perhaps the simplest solution is also the most uncomfortable one: Put everyone in the same room. Ask the questions. And let the answers speak for themselves.
