John Fetterman Abandons Democrats Over Mamdani, “If That’s What Democrats Have Become, I Am Out”

John Fetterman Zohran Mamdani

Senator John Fetterman has officially walked away from the Democratic Party, and he made sure to take something with him on the way out. The Pennsylvania lawmaker says the moment that pushed him over the edge was watching Zohran Mamdani visit Ground Zero in New York and, in Fetterman’s eyes, treat the memorial like a place to have fun with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“Well, if that’s what Democrats have become, I am out,” Fetterman said.

Then came the twist nobody expected. Fetterman reportedly gave the Democrat book of tricks, the party’s internal playbook of campaign strategies and messaging plans, directly to the Republican National Committee.

“Enough of their communist plan for America,” he added.

For anyone who has followed Fetterman’s career, the break isn’t totally surprising. Over the past few years, he has steadily moved away from the progressive wing of his party. He has been a vocal supporter of Israel, pushed for stronger border security, and openly criticized activists he thought had gone too far. He has also kept his blunt, plain-spoken style, which has earned him fans across party lines.

Still, leaving outright is a huge step. And handing over the playbook is something Washington has rarely, if ever, seen.

Ground Zero carries enormous emotional weight. Nearly three thousand people died there on September 11, 2001, and the memorial remains a place of grief and reflection. Visitors speak in hushed voices. Many leave flowers. For Fetterman, a casual visit by two high-profile progressives seemed to show just how far the party had drifted from the values of everyday Americans.

“It’s not a photo op. It’s a graveyard,” said Alexa Bruno, a schoolteacher from Scranton whose uncle was a New York firefighter. “I’m glad somebody in Washington finally said something.”

Democratic leaders were caught flat-footed. Several were said to be in emergency meetings trying to figure out what exactly was in the playbook and how much damage it could do heading into the next election cycle. Some accused Fetterman of disloyalty. Others privately admitted they’d been worried about losing him for months.

Republicans welcomed the news. Several GOP senators praised Fetterman’s courage, and one strategist joked that they’d need a bigger filing cabinet.

Mamdani, who has become one of the most talked-about figures in New York politics, has made no secret of his socialist leanings. AOC has long been the face of the party’s progressive movement. To Fetterman, the two of them together at Ground Zero summed up everything that had gone wrong.

It’s not yet clear what Fetterman’s next move will be. He could join the Republican caucus, sit as an independent, or simply keep doing what he’s always done, which is speak his mind and let the chips fall.

Neither Mamdani nor AOC has commented. But one thing is certain: the Democratic Party just lost a senator, and it may have lost a lot more than that.
