Kid Rock has a message for Taylor Swift: Don’t forget the people who were there before you became one of the biggest stars in the world.
Rock criticized Swift over what he sees as her willingness to attack conservatives while continuing to mention his name whenever she takes aim at the political right. According to Rock, Swift’s current fame has made her forget just how different her career looked in the early days.
“Any time she wants to go after conservatives, she brings up my name,” Rock said. “Back in 2002 I took her on tour. She was a skinny kid with a banjo. Nobody knew who she was.”
Rock said he remembers Swift as a young performer who was still trying to find her place in the music industry. He argued that established artists giving newcomers a platform can make a major difference in whether those performers get noticed.
The musician said he now finds it frustrating to see Swift criticize people who were part of the industry before she became a household name.
“Without me and other artists she mocks now, she’d be nowhere today,” Rock said.
His argument was not that Swift should remain the same person she was when she was starting out. Instead, Rock said he believes success should come with some appreciation for the opportunities that helped make it possible.
“You can change your views,” Rock said. “You can change your music. You can change your entire career. But you shouldn’t forget the people who gave you a chance when nobody knew your name.”
Rock also pointed to the enormous difference between Swift’s early career and her current status. What began as a young country performer’s attempt to build an audience eventually turned into a global entertainment empire.
He suggested that the scale of Swift’s success makes it even more important to remember where the journey began.
“Everybody loves you when you’re on top,” Rock said. “The real question is whether you remember the people who were around before you got there.”
The comments also touched on the changing relationship between music and politics. Rock has become closely associated with conservative audiences, while Swift has become increasingly outspoken on political and social issues.
Rock said he believes artists are free to express their opinions but should expect criticism when they use their platforms to attack people on the other side.
“You want to talk politics? Fine,” Rock said. “You want to criticize conservatives? That’s your right. But don’t act like the people who helped you along the way suddenly don’t matter.”
He said Swift’s enormous success should not rewrite the history of her early career.
“Remember where you came from, Taylor,” Rock added.
The remarks are likely to add another chapter to the long-running clash between celebrities with very different political audiences. Swift has built an extraordinary career since her early country days, while Rock has remained one of the most outspoken conservative voices in the music world.
For Rock, however, the issue comes down to one simple principle: success should never erase the people who helped open the first door.
“You don’t have to agree with everybody who helped you,” he said. “But you should remember who gave you a shot.”
