Kurt Russell has reportedly put an end to speculation that he could reunite with his former Backdraft co-star Robert De Niro, making it clear that he has no interest in working with the veteran actor again.
Russell and De Niro shared the screen in the 1991 firefighter drama Backdraft, a film that brought together a major cast and became one of the memorable action movies of its era. More than three decades later, however, Russell apparently has no plans to recreate that experience.
“I’ve spent several weeks working alongside him many years ago and I remember how hard it was,” Russell remarked. “It seemed to me like it lasted much longer than it actually did.”
According to Russell, one of the biggest challenges during the production was the amount of time spent discussing the screenplay. He recalled that De Niro frequently raised concerns about the script and wanted to discuss various aspects of the movie with the filmmakers.
“He had something to complain about the screenplay constantly,” Russell explained. “We spent much time discussing the film with the director, and sometimes it seemed like we were spending too much time talking about the movie than filming it.”
Russell suggested that the experience left a lasting impression on him, even though Backdraft eventually became a successful film and remains one of the better-known entries in both actors’ careers.
While actors often reunite decades after working together, Russell said there is little chance of that happening in this case.
“No salary in the world will make me go through this experience one more time,” Russell emphasized. “I’ve had a very good career and had worked with some fantastic actors before. But I have no desire to go back there again. Bobby and I won’t be collaborating again.”
The comments have fueled renewed discussion about what it was actually like behind the scenes during the production of Backdraft. The movie, directed by Ron Howard, followed firefighters battling dangerous blazes while investigating a series of suspicious fires.
Russell played firefighter Stephen “Bull” McCaffrey, while De Niro portrayed Donald “Shadow” Rimgale, a fire investigator helping uncover the truth behind the fires.
Despite Russell’s apparent reluctance to reunite with De Niro, his comments don’t diminish the significance of their previous collaboration. Backdraft featured an impressive ensemble cast and remains a recognizable title from the early 1990s.
For Russell, however, revisiting the working relationship appears to be a different matter.
The actor said his career has given him the opportunity to work with numerous performers and filmmakers, and he appears content to leave his experience with De Niro in the past.
There has been no indication that the two actors are planning another project together. Any future reunion would therefore come as a surprise, particularly after Russell’s blunt comments about their previous experience.
For now, fans hoping to see Russell and De Niro share the screen again may have to settle for revisiting Backdraft.
More than 30 years after the film’s release, Russell appears to have made his position clear: whatever professional respect remains between the two actors, another collaboration isn’t something he is looking for.
And judging by his comments, not even a major paycheck would be enough to change his mind.
