“They Really Don’t Have Any Values Anymore”: Fetterman Turns on Democrats Over Pelosi and January 6th

John Fetterman and Nancy Palosi

Senator John Fetterman is done playing along. The Pennsylvania Democrat said this week that his party needs to stop protecting Nancy Pelosi and start being honest with the American people, especially when it comes to what happened at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

“We have to stop living in denial about everything and stop being so secretive about what happened on January 6th,” Fetterman told reporters. “Don’t people deserve the truth?”

It was a striking moment. Pelosi was Speaker of the House at the time of the riot, and Republicans have spent years asking why the Capitol wasn’t better prepared that day. Democrats have mostly brushed those questions aside. Fetterman, it seems, no longer wants to.

The senator has been moving away from his party for some time. Since taking office, he has broken with Democratic leaders on immigration, energy, and foreign policy, and he has made a habit of saying things his colleagues would rather keep quiet. Many in his party once saw him as a rising progressive star. These days, they are not quite sure what to make of him.

According to people around him, loyalty to the party has become harder and harder for Fetterman. They say he’s tired of watching leaders defend each other while ignoring what everyday voters are worried about.

“He thinks people can smell it when you’re hiding something,” said one person familiar with his thinking. “And he’s right.”
Asked whether he still identifies with the Democratic Party the way he used to, Fetterman gave an answer that will likely be replayed for weeks.
“They really don’t have any values anymore,” he said.

The backlash came fast. Progressive groups called the comments a betrayal and accused him of helping Republicans rewrite history. A spokesperson for Pelosi said his remarks were “deeply unfortunate” and “not grounded in fact.” Several Democratic aides privately said the leadership is losing patience with him.

Republicans could hardly contain their excitement. GOP senators praised his honesty, and conservative commentators shared the clip widely, calling it a sign that cracks inside the Democratic Party are getting bigger.

In Pennsylvania, the reaction is mixed. Some voters who backed Fetterman in 2022 say they feel he has drifted too far from the people who elected him. Others say his willingness to break ranks is exactly why they like him.

“He’s not a puppet,” said a voter in Erie. “He says what he believes. You don’t see that a lot anymore.”

Fetterman has shown no sign of backing down. If anything, he seems more comfortable than ever saying what’s on his mind, no matter who it upsets.
For Democrats, that might be the most worrying part. If you’ve lost Fetterman, you’ve lost everyone.
