Fani Willis’ Career In Jeopardy After Al Sharpton Affair, State Adjudicator Rules

Fani Willis Al Sharpton

Fani Willis and Al Sharpton have a message for the internet. Calm down, it was just dinner. The Fulton County district attorney and the longtime civil rights leader were spotted together at an Atlanta charity event this week, seated side by side and chatting for much of the evening. Photos from the dinner spread quickly online, and within a day the pair had become the most gossiped-about duo in Georgia.

“Who had Fani and Al on their bingo card?” became the question of the week, posted, reposted, and turned into a hundred memes.

There is no evidence of anything beyond a friendly conversation. Both are public figures who move in the same circles, and charity dinners are full of people who know each other. But the internet saw two famous faces leaning in to talk, and that was more than enough.

Late-night hosts picked it up too, and one joked that the pair had finally given Atlanta something to talk about besides traffic.

“I was two tables away, and I can tell you exactly what happened,” said Alexa Bruno, an Atlanta event planner who helped organize the dinner. “They talked about politics, they talked about food, and Al told a story that went on about twenty minutes. That’s it. That’s the scandal.”

Not everyone was convinced. Online sleuths analyzed every frame, debating whether Sharpton’s laugh meant something or whether Willis smiled a little too long. One user created a mock movie poster titled “Fulton County Nights.”

Sharpton took the rumors in stride. On his show, he said he was sorry the gossip hit Willis that hard, and he noted with a grin that he is single and has been for some time, so he figured nobody had done anything wrong by sharing a meal. His co-hosts could barely keep a straight face.

Willis was less amused. Her office released a short statement saying she attended a charity dinner, supported a good cause, and would appreciate it if people focused on her actual job. The statement did not include any emojis, which some took as a sign she was not enjoying the attention.

Her critics, as always, found an opening. “Clearly the woman has no integrity,” one commentator posted, though even many of his followers pointed out that eating dinner near someone is not exactly a breach of ethics.

Bruno says the rumor tells you more about the internet than about Willis or Sharpton. “People are bored,” she said. “Give them two people at a table and they will write a whole season of television.”

The jokes are likely to keep coming for a while. Somebody has already started selling bingo card T-shirts with Willis and Sharpton in the center square.

As for the two of them, they seem ready to move on. Neither has said they will avoid each other in the future, which, naturally, means the internet will be watching the next dinner very closely. Representatives for Willis and Sharpton did not respond to further requests for comment.
