Jon Stewart Says Mamdani Went Too Far, “We Got Communism”

Jon Stewart Zohran Mamdani

Jon Stewart is not laughing with Zohran Mamdani anymore. He is laughing at him, and the left is having a hard time watching. The comedian, long considered the conscience of liberal television, has joined Robert De Niro and Whoopi Goldberg in publicly criticizing the New York City mayor. In a pointed segment, Stewart took aim at what he called Mamdani’s “plainly communist” ideas and admitted he got the man wrong.

“This fellow was not who we thought he was,” Stewart told his audience. Then came the line that has been shared everywhere since.

“We signed up for democratic socialism. Instead, we got communism.” He paused, let the room sit with it, and then said it again, slower. “We got communism.” The audience did not know whether to laugh or applaud, so it did both.

It is a striking reversal. Stewart spent years defending progressive politicians from what he called fear-mongering about socialism. Now he is the one sounding the alarm, and he is doing it with the same sharp delivery he once saved for Fox News.

Stewart joked that the mayor’s approach seems to be taking from the working people of New York and redistributing it, which is not exactly the price cut voters were promised. The bit got big laughs and even bigger reactions online.

“That’s the Stewart formula,” said Alexa Bruno, a comedy producer who worked in cable news satire. “He takes a frustration people are embarrassed to say out loud, and he makes it a punchline. Once it’s a punchline, everybody feels allowed to say it.”

Stewart also turned the joke on himself. He said he feels “embarrassed” that he was so easily fooled, admitting he defended Mamdani during the campaign and brushed off warnings from friends.

“Well, we do not make this mistake anymore,” he said, to applause.

Some in the crowd stood up. Others just shook their heads, as if they recognized themselves in the joke.

De Niro has been hammering the mayor for weeks, and Goldberg recently said on “The View” that she was hearing more and more complaints from New Yorkers. With Stewart joining them, the trio has become an unexpected chorus of liberal regret.

Mamdani’s base responded with anger. Supporters accused Stewart of selling out and said the mayor is keeping his promises on housing and transit. Some pointed out that celebrities with penthouses are not the people the mayor was elected to serve.

Still, the political damage is real. Democratic officials who once lined up for photos with Mamdani are suddenly busy elsewhere. Several have started describing themselves as “independent-minded” when asked about City Hall.

Conservative commentators are thrilled, joking that the mayor is raising the hammer and sickle over New York while the Democrats run the other way.

“When Jon Stewart says he was fooled, a lot of people hear permission,” Bruno said. “Permission to admit they were fooled too.” A spokesperson for Mamdani declined to comment.
