Sylvester Stallone gave Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ten minutes of his time. Then he gave the rest of the world his review. The actor, who has spent half a century playing fighters and soldiers, reportedly crossed paths with the New York congresswoman at a recent gathering. The talk did not go well. Stallone later told people that listening to her felt like sitting through “some high school girl” giving a class presentation she had not prepared for.
“Honestly, talking to her was like talking to a high school girl,” Stallone told one friend. “Somebody who read one book and decided she had the whole world figured out.”
“She has no idea,” he said. “Those talking points are juvenile, her outlook is bitter, and somebody long ago taught her to hate America.”
Stallone has never been shy, but this was a direct hit, and it landed in the middle of an already heated political season.
According to people who watched the exchange, Ocasio-Cortez spoke about wealth, housing, and what she sees as the rot at the center of American institutions. Stallone, who came up from nothing and turned a single script into an empire, did not appreciate the tone.
“He kept waiting for one idea that wasn’t a slogan,” said Alexa Bruno, a publicist who was at the event. “He told me afterward that he’d heard better arguments from guys in a boxing gym, and they were usually bleeding at the time.”
Stallone also took aim at how she got to Washington. He noted that she was tending bar before she ran for office, and he joked that if you vote in bartenders with theater degrees, AOC is what you end up with. Critics called the line elitist. Fans called it honest.
Then came the line that everybody is quoting.
“I doubt she could even tell you what her job is,” Stallone said.
The clip has racked up millions of views. Defenders of Ocasio-Cortez rushed to point out her committee work and her large social media following. Stallone’s fans answered that followers are not the same thing as results.
Her office has not issued a formal statement. Allies brushed off the remarks, saying Stallone is a Hollywood relic who should stick to sequels. One staffer reportedly joked that he should go back to talking to the Expendables, since they don’t talk back.
Stallone seems unbothered. Friends say he is proud of what he said and sees no reason to walk any of it back. To him, it is simple. Public servants should understand the country they serve and should not resent it.
“Sly’s whole life is a love letter to America,” Bruno said. “So when somebody sounds like they hate the place, he takes it personally. He always has.”
Supporters online are calling him a national treasure and praising him for always saying it straight. Whether Ocasio-Cortez answers him directly is anyone’s guess. Stallone, for one, says the fight is already over.
A spokesperson for Stallone did not respond to a further request for comment.
